I have to give Morningstar Farms (www.morningstarfarms.com), a subsidiary of Kellogg's, a lot of credit for many of their great non-meat/poultry makeovers such as their veggie dogs and breakfast strips (equals bacon). So I was intrigued by one of their newest offerings--a "chicken" (actually chik'n) pot pie--using a soy-based substitute for the chicken.
My first mistake was when I cooked it. I just glanced at the microwave directions for the time it was supposed to cook, and until my pie's crust came out half-burnt, and I had re-checked the instructions to figure out what went amiss, that I found out that you were supposed to leave the pie to cook in the box with the side flap open. Apparently, there was a special silver coating on the inside top of the carton that helped it cook correctly. Okay, so I flunked microwave 101. Otherwise, the pot pie smelled great cooking and it tasted amazingly close to the "real thing".
My second mistake was when I again missed some crucial fine print on the box. For as I reviewed the ingredients list on the box again, buried in the crust portion was partially hydrogenated oil. That was extremely disappointing, and inexcusable for something that is supposed to be a healthy variation of a standard food item!
Hey Morningstar! Newsflash--people who strive to eat healthfully do not want to find trans fats in their food! Shame on you for enticing us and then delivering a pot pie that still has the ability to clog our arteries. Send this one back to the kitchen!
