My philosophy of healthy eating is simple--that you can go what I call "NMP" (no meat or poultry) either full-time, or from time-to-time, while still eating the foods you love. You can eat the foods you grew up on, and the foods you like to eat out--you just find healthier ways to do so by making substitutions. Here's an example of how to apply this philosophy as excerpted from my book Have Your Cheeseburger And Keep Your Health Too!
The Recipe
Organic "Chex-style" substitute cereal (I use Nature's Path Heritage Bites and Oaty Bites
Organic "Cheerios(-style" substitute cereal (I use New Organics Co. Golden Toasted O's
organic raisins (to avoid sulfites)
dry roasted, not smoked, almonds
Take a large Ziploc-type plastic bag and fill halfway with your chosen cereal(s). Add two handfuls of raisins and one handful of almonds.
Be sure the bag is sealed and turn bag upside down and shake until all items are well-mixed. Keep on hand for healthful munching--break down into small bags for quick "grab and go" snacks or to complement your lunch.
Note--why not Chex Snack Mix? They use hydrogenated oil and the fiber in the organic cereals listed above is much higher. Plus, by being organic, they are GMO-free to boot. This snack also works well with other dried fruit like cherries and blueberries (buy organic though).
Pressed for time or just love barbecue flavor like I do? Check out Nature's Path( Organic Snack Mix--no fruit, but it's delicious and GMO, hydrogenated oil and MSG free. You can find it in health food or natural food markets.
